When you’re a marketer that does so much important CRE lead generation in a handful of social media apps, it’s easy to feel like social media rules your life. It’s just as important to take those moments away from social media as it is to step away from your work e-mail to spend time with friends and family.

But when your social life and your work is driven so much by social media that is right at your fingertips 24/7, it’s easy to get sucked in. And before you know it you’re sitting across from your mother, spouse, best friend or brother having a meal without lifting your gaze above that little glowing screen.

It’s time to breathe and step away from the iPhone… just put it down. I know you can do it. And here are a few ways to kick that addiction once and for all.

Limit the amount of time you’re allowed to be online.

It’s easy for us to fall into the deep, dark trap of scrolling the feed every time our eyes or hands are idle. We also develop the habit of opening our browser to Facebook any time we need a mental break from our day’s work. To avoid your social media channels being your go-to any moment you have an ounce of free time, set a time limit on your surfing. Let’s say you can give yourself an hour of personal social time and then a few hours of important business marketing.

Turn off notifications.

It’s so easy to get sucked in by likes, comments and messages when they’re constantly screaming at you every time you glance over at your smartphone. You’ve probably even sat across from friends or family members during dinner watching them glance over at their phone every time that screen lights up with a new notification. Take control of your life back by shutting off those automatic notifications. When you have your designated social media time, you can return messages and reply to comments to your heart’s content.

Make it a reward for something.

If you’re struggling to be more productive in your business in general, but you love nothing more than a 20-minute scroll through your social media on your coffee break – set up that time as a reward for a job well done. As soon as you finish those three spreadsheets, you can spend 15 minutes watching cat videos. The second you’re done cold calling those three potential CRE clients, you can watch some Insta-stories. Let social media be a reward and you’ll feel less guilty about the time you’re spending online. You’ll also be a lot more productive during your day job!

Social media isn’t going anywhere and with that we have to be careful not to become too addicted to life online especially when there are so many “in real life” activities and people to enjoy.
